Postby Rick » Thu May 17, 2007 8:59 pm

How hard is it ?

How long does it take ?

Are they hard to program ?

Well , we will find out very soon
I'm going to do a step by step with pictures and full tuning instructions
This weekend ...

Look for it on monday night .. Weather permitting ..
There is a call for rain . if it holds out long enough I will be able
to do the test ride and fine tuning for a complete install

I'm sure its a simple deal ..
But not eveyone is comfortable hooking things up there selves

and when it comes to hooking a computer to your own bike
it can get a little shaky..

As far as a download and go .. sometimes you may need to fine tune
which you can do using the PCIII

I'm going to go through the whole menu of options.
maybe between 1 and 2000 rpm range,
I might want a little more OR less Fuel
maybe advance/retard timing and so on ..

This can all be done ..

Custom maps can also be made ..
I might try one just for shits and giggles :D

Yeah that is why my bike has been on the dyno the last 2 years getting tuned! I highly recommend the dyno time!! Just make sure you're not running lean! Other than that, I believe you'll love the thing as much as I love mine!!

I may be easy for an HD Wrench but not everybody is ..
That is the reason for this post ..

To make it easy for anyone to do ..

I did make a custom Map to rectify an Issue I had with my bike since
0 miles ...
Harley (Dealer) could not do anything for it ...

Its a common problem any F/I Harley Owner may have
and I plan to solve it :D once and for all

And make it as easy as possible for others to do the same

Once all is completed and tested I will post everything right here ...
Step By Step With Pictures

Ok here we go ....

First unpack it from the box .. Your map can be downloaded on the table
before you install it on the bike

Image

Then go ahead and install the included software into your Computer
LapTop preferred ...

Image

Choose the correct Power Commander you purchased

Image

Just follow the install instructions ,, Very straight forward no need for me to talk you through it :D

Once installed you can go get the Map right for you

Image

Just choose form the list of downloads depending on your bike..

Image

Image

After you downloaded your Map ,Open the Power Commander Program
with your Power Commander hooked up to your Laptop...
Via a 9 volt battery and the included USB cable...

Please take note you must push the USB cable into the Power Commander
so there is no metal showing on the plug

It may seem difficult to push it all the way in BUT is extremely important to do so .

Image

open your map you downloaded from the Site

Image

Once its open Click send Map

Image

you may notice I made a custom Map so it may look a little different
I will go into customs maps in another Post

If you have had new injectors installed in your bike as I had ..
Stock were 8* I now have 25* so I need to lean it out a little
(Funny Lean out a Fuel Injected Bike :D) But yes now that the Power Commander is being installed ...It's now needed

So what I'm doing below is holding all three buttons down at the same time .. Low I will leave be ..
I need it fattennd up there to help get rid of that
lean popping on decel ..
Mid will go two lines down High One line down

The Fun Begins

1St, Remove the seat

Image

Next remove the two bolts hold the relay bracket

Image

Cut the three wire ties holding the bracket to the harness

Image

Next, Remove bracket and Forget about it ,,It will not be reused

Image

Then remove the two bolts holding the mud guard between the frame and rear tire

Image

This is what you have after the mud guard is removed

Remove the battery ..No Short cuts ... Its gotta go
Make sure you check and mark the wires going to the battery if need be
you might have an accessory that is hooked up ...

Now you run the power commander wiring from the bottom up
through the left side right along the factory harness ..
Make sure your new harness is clear of the swingarm
and the drive belt.

Do make sure you secure the usb cable and protect the metal end from water
and possible grounding out

A paper towel and some windex ..
Clean off any dirt and grease you might have left behind
Wipe down your pipes ..
It should look something like this ..
Then replace your seat and fire that Mother Up !

Image

Next will be some more fine tuning ..
I will connect the Laptop and make a few Adjustments ..
I'm hoping to get this done Tomorrow...

So stay tuned

It's a fairly simple job .. But can get difficult if you try to
adjust it without knowing what the Adjustments are for
and how they work ..

If I can help you Drop me a line ...

They do have a tech support center .. and for the most part

It runs strong ..
I'm going to tweak the Map ..

I'm a "It's got to be 100%" kind of guy
But I would say out of the box with a few adjustments
it works Very Good and well worth the Money ...

I Paid just a couple dollars more then the
Download done At the Dealer that did me no Good at all

I'm out in the shed now getting prepped for it right now ! :D

I will place the new post Shortly with the Fine Tune
